Santa Claus isn't the only one coming this December - so is Jack Frost! As the temperatures start to drop, your energy bills start to rise. Here are some tips to use this month to conserve the heat being pushed into your home.

Move your furniture away from heating vents – Furniture that blocks your vents will drastically decrease the efficiency of your heating system. Heat being pushed into the back of your sofa will not circulate into your home and will prevent the air from warming up. As a result, your heating unit will work harder to compensate, meaning more money on your gas bill.
Clean vents are efficient vents – Radiators, vents and baseboards should be kept dust and dirt free. Not only does the dust reduce the amount of heat that can be pushed into the home, but it will also circulate into the air, which could result in breathing complications.
Seal your home - If there is cold air seeping into your home around your windows, chances are that means the warm air is leaking out. Replacement windows are a cost-effective solution to keep the cold air outside and the warm air inside.
Do NOT run your fireplace on the night of December 24th - Ok, this might not technically be an energy efficiency thing, but c'mon - you don't want Santa to get burned on his way down the chimney, do you?

Long Fence and Home gives the gift of happy, healthy homes this holiday season

As the seasons of giving approaches, our thoughts drift to one group that defines giving: American veterans. These men and women risked their lives and fought bravely for our country, but now that they have aged, they need assistance with basic household chores such as cleaning gutters, clearing brush, trimming tree limbs or maintaining their sidewalks and landscapes. That’s why Long Fence and Home, the Washington DC area’s leading home improvement company, is teaming up with Decorate-A-Vet to provide home makeovers for veterans in Northern Virginia this holiday season.

As part of the partnership, Long Fence and Home will install new gutter systems or new replacement windows in the homes of six veterans in Falls Church who served in either the Korean War or World War II. Through these installations, the veterans’ homes will not only become more energy efficient, but they will reduce the amount of maintenance needed for cleaning and repair around the home. The newly renovated homes will be unveiled on December 3 in a short ceremony.Additional renovations that Decorate-A-Vet has commissioned to be done by other home improvement contractors are landscaping, mulching, painting, handrail installation and tree stump removal. These generous donations will improve the appearance and functionality of the veterans’ homes.

On top of the home improvements, Long Fence and Home is also collecting items for a Holiday Gift Box that will be presented to the veterans during their home unveiling. Long Fence and Home is a regional home improvement company servicing the areas of Maryland, Washington D.C. and parts of Virginia. They employ approximately 115 employees in Washington, D.C metro area. Their product line includes replacement windows, doors, kitchen remodels, siding, gutter jackets. Their newest division, Long Energy Solutions, includes insulation and attic mirror, made of NASA technology and commonly known in the industry as radiant barrier.

History

A sister company of Long Fence, Long Fence and Home was founded in 1994 by Bob Long to expand upon the company’s locally recognized name. John DePaola, then Vice President of Business Development, was given the opportunity to lead the new division and is currently the President and CEO of the operation. He runs this business alongside Executive Officer and daughter of Bob Long, Jill Long DePaola. In 2005, Long Fence and Home achieved local recognition as a premier provider of home improvement solutions and began operating as its own business entity. Though their services are similar to that of a home improvement contractor, Long Fence and Home has recently evolved into the role of an energy solutions provider, outfitting local homes with replacement windows, replacement doors, kitchen remodeling, attic insulation, home energy assessments, Gutter Jackets and Attic Mirror. In 2010, the company expanded its services through the creation of Long Energy Solutions. This expansion was in response to rising energy prices and the desire of many homeowners to become more energy efficient.

Long Windows

Founded in 1994, Long Windows is the flagship division of Long Fence and Home and is the exclusive provider of Serious Materials’ Quantum2 window in the Washington D.C. and Maryland area, the window that has gained recent publicity for its role in the major energy retrofit of the Empire State Building in 2010. Long Windows offers vinyl replacement units that feature heat mirror technology. Heat mirror reflects UV rays and is considered one of the top 100 inventions of the past millennium. Long Windows products feature an R-Value of 4.0 to 6.25, which exceeds the Energy Star criteria for the year 2015.

Long Doors

Long Doors was founded in 1994 and offers products made by Provia Door. Long Fence and Home has received Platinum Club recognition from Provia in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Long Doors are Energy Star certified and offer an R-value of 15.

Long Kitchens

Outside of home energy solutions, Long Fence and Home also offers a kitchen remodeling for local homeowners. Founded in 1998, Long Kitchens specializes in kitchen cabinet and countertop replacement. They are a recognized member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association and Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association.

Long Siding

Established in 1994, Long Siding offers energy efficient vinyl siding and Versetta stone accents for residential homes. This energy efficient siding features an R-Value of 4.3.

Long Insulation

A department of Long Energy Solutions, Long Insulation provides blown-in cellulose attic insulation to create a more energy efficient home. Their cellulose insulation, (created by Green Energy Barrier??) is comprised of 85% recycled material including newspaper. This insulation is chemically treated to prevent fire. The company is a certified ResNet Home Energy Survey Professional, a member of the Energy Audit Institute and holds a certification from the Building Performance Institute.

Long Attic Mirror

Attic Mirror is a form of radiant barrier insulation, featuring technology originally designed by NASA. In attics, this material is used to redirect heat back to its source and promote a consistent temperature in the home. Attic Mirror has a Class A/Class 1 Fire Rating and meets fire and smoke safety requirements of federal, state and local building codes.

Long Gutters
